  • Hearts and flowers no more?

Hey folks. Well as Valentine’s Day draws near, I was hoping to find a bevy of things for Erzulie Freda. Being a child of Freda means I utilize lots if things you see thus time of year. Pink hearts, chocolates in heart and flower shaped boxes and lacy doilies in delicate white or shades of rose. To my dismay, pickings are rather slim.

I cannot find doilies anywhere😔. Guess my Freda decor is going to necessitate some invention and creativity!

Does anyine have any nifty suggestiins for me? If you do, please feel free to email morgan@spellmaker.com! I would love to hear and see your ideas!!

  • Februa

Hey all! I just wanted to take a moment to give a shout out to all you folks who are waiting on magical results, in the midst of casting, or just plain single as we approach Valentine’s Day.

Sure, it's great to have a partner and exchange flowers, chocolates or fancy cards. It's great to be in a relationship for Valentine’s Day but did you know the holiday dates back to (yup you guessed it) Paganism?

Februa, from which we derive the name of the month of Fwbruary, was a Roman festivel that was celebrated  February 13 through February 15 and it focused on cleansing bad spirits and inviting in good spirits and fertility.

So, take it from those ancient peoples that on Valentine’s Day you can focus on loving self care and on refeshing yourself, your environment and your life. Magic really does change things and helps us to keep evolving into the best version of ourselves. And after all, you are one half of the equation in any relationship 🙂

So take heart, and make Valentine’s Day a celebration of loving you! It is a relationship you will have for the rest of your life, and worth every moment you spend developing it!

  • 5 Things You probably know about Erzulie Freda- and 5 things you maybe didn’t

Hello readers! As we approach February and our annual house ritual to the lwa who presides over all things having to do with love, Erzulie Freda, I felt like writing about her was not just pertinent, but important.

I serve Erzulie Freda and keep a permanent altar space for her in my dining room. My relationship with her has had some ups and downs because of my own insecurities and doubts in myself, so I wanted to clear some things up for any of you who might have them.

5 things you know about Erzulie Freda

    1. Her colors are white, pink, gold and light blue.

    2. Those who serve Freda keep 3 wedding bands of real gold to signify the fact that she has 3 husbands; Agwe, Damballah, and Ogoun.

    3. Erzulie Freda loves pretty and luxurious things, such as roses, champagne and jewelry.

    4. Erzulie Freda can be called on for matters of love and is associated with the Mater de la Rosa, or sorrowful mother.

    5. Freda favors items that have lace, emboidery or sparkles, and she loves hearts.

5 things you didn't know about Erzulie Freda

    1. She takes on the sorrows of the world. This is often mentioned but glossed over when it comes to Freda. She is so very compassionate, nurturing and warm. She cries so we do not have to. You may cry when you make a service to her, and Erzulie Freda will take those tears and help you as you process your emotions.

    2. Freda loves fine things, but whatever you can afford, if it is presented with a sincere heart, will be accepted. I find that attention to detail really wins her heart. You cannot afford the dozen roses? Give her one flower in a really lovely cup, jar or vase, and she will LOVE you for it. If you found it at the Salvation Army for a quarter and it makes your heart sing, I promise you it will delight Freda as well!!

    3. Freda ia NOT wrathful or lazy. This is not to say she is not protective of her children-I assure you she is. But if you mess up your words, spill some water, or yes, even accidentally set her altar on fire (I have done this.) she won't be mad or do anything to harm you or your relationship. I promise. You have to really go on a path with bad intent to make a lwa angry. AND she works hard for you. But remember she is a lady, so she may do it quietly and with so much grace that you don't immediately realize it!

    3. The way you serve Freda may be vastly different than the way I am drawn to serve her, or your bestie is drawn to serve her. If you are seeking things to use to make a service to Erzulie Freda, listen to your heart. For you, it may be conversation hearts, for me it may be chocolate kisses. And we both would be correct!

    4. Once you build a relationship with Freda, she may intuitively show you ways to express love that may surprise you. I have a historically difficult relationship with my mother, but Freda has, more than once, encouraged me to gift my mother with a rose that was intended as a service, or gift my crabby coworker with a little hand lotion from her altar. Freda gave those offerings up for the benefit of a person who was likely in their own emotional pain, and in doing so, shows me how to be compassionate to people who I may feel don't necessarily "deserve" it. The lesson here is the none of us always act in a loving manner and yet, we all benefit from love and thrive from it. I have never regretted following her guidance on this.

    5. Erzulie Freda is strong and exceptionally loyal. She may be the lovely belle of the ball outwardly, but she is powerful and wise. She is a true steel magnolia!

  • Twas the Night Before Imbolc Brigantia…

Hi folks-just a little tidbit about Brigid's cross in preparation for our Imbolc sabbat.

Brigid's cross is said to help guard the home and prevent bad energy from entering. Traditionally, Brigid's crosses are left outside of a home's front door the night before Imbolc, so that when St. Bigid passes by she will bless the talisman. (And to leave an offering for Brigid's white cow to nibble on such as grass or an oatmeal cookie!)

In voudou, a red scarf or shawl can be left outside of the front door the night of January 31st so Maman Brigitte blesses the garment to wear when the owner works on healing. (Healing is something that our beloved Maman Brigitte, wife of Baron Samedi, does incredibly well!)

In one night, with these 2 little tasks, you can amp up protection for your home and ay healing work you wish to do this yeat!

  • Winter stones

So crystal peeps let's talk about some stones for winter.

Looking to clean your home, your energetic vibration, and even your other stones? Bust out some selenite!

I love selenite because who doesn't love a cleaning hack? You can keep crystal rings, necklaces and bracelets on a selenite tower for an energetic scrub each day, or place your stones in a bowl with selenite.

Golden Healer-I love the goldwn color of this stone! Golden Healer can help align your chakras and looks beautiful in the snowy white backdrop of winter.

Shungite-This deep black stone hails from Russia and is said to keep harmful EMF at bay. A good choice to keep near your computer, cell phone, microwave oven or television set.

Blue kyanite-A deep royal blue stone this is great when you are feeling overwhelmed, as many of us do during and after the holiday bustle. Let the azure hue and high energy take some of that stress so you can chill like a snowman!

Clear qartz- This beautiful stone is said to magnify the effects of other stones and can cast beautiful rainbows when hit by the sun during our precious few daylight winter hours.

Just some ideas, folks. I love learning about stones and how they help people and I would love any feedback from you readers as well!

  • La Befana-A Witch of Christmas Past

Hello one and all. I am back to blogging after a little hiatus and I have just discovered a new and fascinating reason to love the Christmas Season-the Italian Christmas witch known as La Befana.

The legend of La Befana tells of a little old woman who was so busy cooking and cleaning that she declined an invitation from the 3 Magi to help them find the infant Jesus. Another tale says that La Befana refused the 3 wise men lodging for the night and brings gifts to all children in Italy as a sort of penance.

But some facts about her are certain-she is akways seen carrying or riding a broom, she is an old woman, and she is covered in soot because she makes her way into homes via the fireplace. How seasonally appropriate that she is a crone! ♥️

La Befana gifts good children with candy, fruit, and gifts, and leaves bits of coal for ill behaved children. (Today the tradition continues with black coal candy, which is something very familiar to this coal country girl.)

La Befana flies the winter skies on the night of the Epiphany, January 6th.

Those of us who have a "kitchen witch" or bring fragrant cinnamon brooms into our homes during the winter are already channelling the energy of La Befana 🙂

Legend has it that she will sweep the floor with her broom before taking off on it for anyone lucky enough to receive a visit from her.

I love any reason to channel my inner witch-and reading about La Befana the Italian witch of Christmas has given me just that-a bewitching tradition indeed!

  • Get ready for Scorpio Season

Oh boy! Happy almost Halloween everyone! Are you ready for scorpio season? This time of year just seems to bring mysteries and mystical things to the forefront, doesn't it? Samhain, Fet Ghede, Dias de la Meurtos-all of the events focus on our deepest ancestral core, guidance from beyond the veil and things that remind us that we too will join our passed on loved ones some day.

Astrologically, Samhain corresponds to the point where the planet Mercury is at 15degrees scorpio, which generally occurs about November 7th. In the Northern hemisphere, we also turn our clocks back one hour and the nights become longer.

I hope everyone is enjoying the magical mysteries of this beautiful season. Ayibobo!

  • Those vicious villains!

So… Today I ran across a meme on social media that said something like why were we taught to be afraid of witches and not the people who burned them alive?. And it got me thinking about how percwption really does inform reality.

I used to be that girl that took everything very VERY personally. If I didn't hear back from someone before my anxiety got the best of me, I quite literally thought that person was mad at me. That I had transgressed our rekationship in some unknown way…and their silence was my punishment.

If someone was rude to me, I automatically assumed it hd something to do with me.

Add to my inherent anxiety a history of emotional trauma from yesteryear and it was a perfect storm of me frantically trying to out out non existing fires.

And then…something miraculous happened. I went blind. Not all the way blind, but blind enough to be legally blind. Suddenly, I was having to leave my job, I could no longer drive a car, and I was bombarded with medical appointments hoping my sight could  be saved via corneal transplant.

Serious health issues were all consuming. Loved ones would text me, or ask me to go out and I would miss their messages or sometimes I was just too exhausted or overwhelmed to answer rhem, letalone have a conversation or go out to socialize.

It was then that I realized how much I had panicked for no reason when my chipper phone message didn't get an immediate call back, or someone did not seem to want to hang out with me. I was on the other end of the spectrum, and finally, I understood.

There were some people I should have apologized to that I did or could not apologize to. But that's ok. Now that I know better, I do better. It's very VERY rarely about me when someone doesn't react to me the way I would like. I am just not that important… Really no one is! My suffering was a blessing because it gave me compassion. We are all just doing the best we can in a world that is stressful, unfair, and sometimes, just damn overwhelming.

So, the villains in my story are few and far between now. Instead, I see a struggling employee, an overwhelmed mom, a depressed individual with social anxiety. I see the why and how and I just feel love and compassion for them.

  • Halloween stones

So all this orange and black and purple all over the place has me thinking of some crystals I'd like to have out (or wear) for the Halloween season.

I have recently been drawn to shungite-a black stone of Russian origin that can help with EMF and other kinds of environmental pollutants.

I have an apache tear stone that was very helpful to me in helping to process grief. I think I may put that up on my ancestral altar.

Another black stone I always have out is obsidian, as it is very protective against negativity. I have 2 large amethyst geodes that are always on display to keep my home free of negativity as well.

Then again, if I am going to wear a stone, I might choose a piece of jet. It is surprisingly lightweight and not only wards off bad but brings in the good!

Besides whatever current Spellmaker charm I am currently wearing, depwnding upon what is going on in my life-these black stones not only are in season but can also do a world of good.

    Just my thoughts tonight. 🙂
