Secrets of the PsalmsPrayer • Psalm Magick • Traditional Spiritual Uses

The Psalms have been prayed for comfort, protection, guidance, blessing, justice, prosperity, and spiritual strength for generations. This page preserves traditional Psalm teachings from the Spellmaker archives and offers free materials for your own prayer work.

From the Spellmaker Psalm Library: Book of Psalms Candle Prayers & Affirmations Essay on Holy Words

The Psalms have long been used devotionally and, in many folk-magick and esoteric traditions, in much the same way that prayers, affirmations, sacred names, and spiritual formulas are used. Individual Psalms have been associated with particular needs or intentions, and some traditions combine the Psalm with prayer, candle work, sacred names, or anointing oil.

This page shares those teachings as spiritual and historical practice. I am not here to promise that a Psalm will force a particular result. Please use these prayers reverently, thoughtfully, and in a way that supports rather than replaces ordinary practical action.

Sometimes the work is combined with Holy Spirit Psalm Oil, candles, incense, or another form of magick. Use the power of the Psalms carefully and with reverence. These correspondences are presented as traditional spiritual teachings, not as guaranteed outcomes.

Some Common Psalm Usages

Psalm for Comfort During Headache or Backache

Psalm #3: For severe headache and backache, pray Psalm #3 over a small quantity of Holy Spirit Psalm Oil, and anoint the head or back while in prayer. This is a traditional spiritual use of the Psalm and oil. It is not medical treatment; prayer and spiritual practice may be used alongside appropriate medical care.

A psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.

1 Lord, how many are my foes!
How many rise up against me!

2 Many are saying of me,
"God will not deliver him."

3 But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.

4 I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.

5 I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

6 I will not fear though tens of thousands
assail me on every side.

7 Arise, Lord!
Deliver me, my God!
Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth of the wicked.

8 From the Lord comes deliverance.
May your blessing be on your people.

Psalm for Successful Business

Psalm #8: If you wish a successful business venture or to procure the goodwill in your business transactions, you should pray this Psalm three days in succession after sundown, thinking all the while of the Holy name of Rechmial, which signifies strong and merciful God of love, grace, and mercy. After praying the Psalm #8, thinking the name Rechmial, also say the following prayer over a small quantity of Holy Spirit Psalm Oil: "May it please thee, Oh, Rechmial Eel, to grant that I may obtain love, grace, and favour in the eyes of men according to they holy will. Amen! Selah!" You may then use the oil either on yourself or dot it about your business area.

1 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
in the heavens.

2 Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.

3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,

4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

5 You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.

6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:

7 all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,

8 the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Psalm for Protection from Persecution

Psalm #11: To put a stop to persecution in all forms, pray this Psalm daily in devotion keeping constantly in mind the holy name of Pele , that all conspiracies against you may be set aside. After praying Psalm #11, close with the following prayer, over a little bit of Holy Spirit Psalm Oil: "Adorable, might, and holy God Pele, with thee is advice, action, and power, and only thou canst work wonders. Turn away from me all that is evil, and protect me from the persecution of evil ones, for the sake of the Great Name Pele. Amen. Sela." Use the oil on yourself - temples, and other pulse points. (Note from Mambo Samantha Corfield: Remember, persecution takes many forms. If you are being emotionally abused in any kind of relationship (love, work, etc.) then you are being persecuted! This psalm also works really well when using it in conjunction with other magickal type works, such as with candles, gris-gris bags, etc.)

1 In the Lord I put my trust;
How can you say to my soul,
"Flee as a bird to your mountain?"

2 For look! The wicked bend their bow,
They make ready their arrow on the string,
That they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart.

3 If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?

4 The Lord is in His holy temple,
The Lord's throne is in heaven;
His eyes behold,
His eyelids test the sons of men.

5 The Lord tests the righteous,
But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.

6 Upon the wicked He will rain coals;
Fire and brimstone and a burning wind
Shall be the portion of their cup.

7 For the Lord is righteous,
He loves righteousness;
His countenance beholds the upright.

Psalm Traditionally Used Against Slander and Libel

Psalm #35: To stop all evil, slanderous libel being maliciously spread about you, pray this Psalm daily and they will cause you no evil. Use the holy name Tehom.

1 Plead my cause, O Lord, with those who strive with me;
Fight against those who fight against me.

2 Take hold of shield and buckler,
And stand up for my help.

3 Also draw out the spear,
And stop those who pursue me.
Say to my soul,
"I am your salvation."

4 Let those be put to shame and brought to dishonor
Who seek after my life;
Let those be turned back and brought to confusion
Who plot my hurt.

5 Let them be like chaff before the wind,
And let the angel[a] of the Lord chase them.

6 Let their way be dark and slippery,
And let the angel of the Lord pursue them.

7 For without cause they have hidden their net for me in a pit,
Which they have dug without cause for my life.

8 Let destruction come upon him unexpectedly,
And let his net that he has hidden catch himself;
Into that very destruction let him fall.

9 And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord;
It shall rejoice in His salvation.

10 All my bones shall say
"Lord, who is like You,
Delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him,
Yes, the poor and the needy from him who plunders him?"

11 Fierce witnesses rise up;
They ask me things that I do not know.

12 They reward me evil for good,
To the sorrow of my soul.

13 But as for me, when they were sick,
My clothing was sackcloth;
I humbled myself with fasting;
And my prayer would return to my own heart.

14 I paced about as though he were my friend or brother;
I bowed down heavily, as one who mourns for his mother.

15 But in my adversity they rejoiced
And gathered together;
Attackers gathered against me,
And I did not know it;
They tore at me and did not cease;

16 With ungodly mockers at feasts
They gnashed at me with their teeth.

17 Lord, how long will You look on?
Rescue me from their destructions,
My precious life from the lions.

18 I will give You thanks in the great assembly;
I will praise You among many people.

19 Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies;
Nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without a cause.

20 For they do not speak peace,
But they devise deceitful matters
Against the quiet ones in the land.

21 They also opened their mouth wide against me,
And said, "Aha, aha!
Our eyes have seen it."

22 This You have seen, O Lord;
Do not keep silence.
O Lord, do not be far from me.

23 Stir up Yourself, and awake to my vindication,
To my cause, my God and my Lord.

24 Vindicate me, O Lord my God, according to Your righteousness;
And let them not rejoice over me.

25 Let them not say in their hearts, "Ah, so we would have it!"
Let them not say, "We have swallowed him up."

26 Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion
Who rejoice at my hurt;
Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor
Who exalt themselves against me.

27 Let them shout for joy and be glad,
Who favor my righteous cause;
And let them say continually,
"Let the Lord be magnified,
Who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant."

28 And my tongue shall speak of Your righteousness
And of Your praise all the day long.

Psalm to Be Respected and Well Received

Psalm #47: If you wish to be respected, beloved, well received in any and all situations, pray this Psalm seven times daily.

1 Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy.

2 For the LORD Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth.

3 He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet.

4 He chose our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.

5 God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets.

6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.

7 For God is the King of all the earth;
sing to him a psalm of praise.

8 God reigns over the nations;
God is seated on his holy throne. 9 The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted.

Psalm for Blessing and Good Fortune in the Home

Psalm #61: If you are moving into a new home, repeat this Psalm in the home, just before moving in, trusting in the name of Schaddel, and you will experience good fortune and luck in the new home. For your present home, clean from top to bottom with plain spring water, leave the home, and then return and repeat this Psalm seven days in a row.

1 Hear my cry, O God;
Attend to my prayer.

2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

3 For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.

4 I will abide in Your tabernacle forever;
I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah

5 For You, O God, have heard my vows;
You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name.

6 You will prolong the king'slife,
His years as many generations.

7 He shall abide before God forever.
Oh, prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him!

8 So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may daily perform my vows.
