  • The Egyptian Festival of the Dead!

    Screenshot_4-8-2024_183539_chatgpt.com

The Egyptian Festival of the Dead, known as the Feast of Wag or the Wag Festival, was an important event in ancient Egypt, reflecting their beliefs about death, the afterlife, and the cyclical nature of life. This festival occurred in early August and wasn't just about mourning; it was a time for celebration, remembrance, and connecting with loved ones who had passed on. As Voodooisants, we can very much relate to this!

The Wag Festival has deep roots in ancient Egyptian culture and religion, which were closely linked to their understanding of the universe and the divine. Egyptians believed that death wasn't the end but a transition to another state of being. This festival was held to honor and appease the deceased, ensuring their safe journey and continued well-being in the afterlife. It was a time for the living to connect with their ancestors, seeking their blessings and guidance.

The festival usually took place at the end of summer, around the time of the Nile's annual flooding. This timing was symbolic, representing renewal and rebirth. Just as the Nile's floodwaters brought fertility to the land, the festival symbolized the rejuvenation of the deceased in the afterlife.

The Wag Festival was marked by various rituals and practices designed to honor the dead and ensure their continued existence in the afterlife. These rituals involved both the entire community and individual families.

Families prepared for the festival by cleaning and decorating the tombs of their deceased relatives. (Fet Ghede, anyone?)  They offered food, drink, flowers, and other gifts at the tombs, believing that the spirits of the dead would partake in these offerings. Special bread, called "teti bread," was baked for the occasion, often shaped like animals or figures, believed to provide sustenance for the deceased.

Offerings weren't limited to food; they also included items like clothing, jewelry, and amulets. These gifts were meant to comfort and assist the deceased in their journey through the afterlife. The offerings were made with great care and respect, reflecting the deep reverence Egyptians had for their ancestors.

One of the most notable aspects of the Wag Festival was the procession to the tombs. Families, often dressed in their finest clothes, would travel to the burial sites of their ancestors, carrying offerings and performing rituals along the way. These processions were joyous and celebratory, with music, dancing, and singing, emphasizing the belief that death was a continuation of life rather than an end.

In addition to family processions, there were also public ceremonies conducted by priests and community leaders. These ceremonies included prayers, hymns, and the recitation of sacred texts. The priests played a crucial role in mediating between the living and the dead, offering prayers and performing rituals to ensure the well-being of the deceased.

Symbolic acts and games were also an integral part of the Wag Festival. One such act was the lighting of lamps and torches, symbolizing the light guiding the deceased through the darkness of the afterlife. The lighting of lamps also represented the eternal flame of life, signifying the belief in the immortality of the soul.

Games and competitions were held to entertain both the living and the spirits of the dead. These activities included mock battles, races, and other athletic contests. The games served as a reminder of the vibrancy of life and the continuity of existence beyond death.

Central to the Wag Festival was the Egyptian belief in the afterlife. Ancient Egyptians saw the afterlife as a mirror image of their earthly existence, a place where the deceased would continue to live, work, and enjoy the pleasures of life. This belief was reflected in the care taken to provide for the needs of the deceased through offerings and rituals.

The journey to the afterlife was challenging, and the deceased needed protection and guidance. Amulets, spells, and the recitation of sacred texts were believed to offer this protection. The "Book of the Dead," a collection of spells and prayers, was often included in tombs to assist the deceased in navigating the afterlife.

The concept of Ma'at, or cosmic order, was central to the Egyptian understanding of the afterlife. The deceased were judged based on their adherence to Ma'at, and those found worthy were granted eternal life in the Field of Reeds, a paradisiacal realm. The Wag Festival was a time to honor the deceased and ensure their alignment with Ma'at, securing their place in the afterlife.

The Wag Festival, like many ancient Egyptian customs, has left a lasting legacy. The reverence for ancestors and the belief in an afterlife influenced not only later Egyptian practices but also other cultures and religions. The themes of remembrance, renewal, and the cyclical nature of life continue to resonate in various cultural and religious traditions around the world.

In contemporary times, the spirit of the Wag Festival can be seen in practices such as the Day of the Dead in Mexico, where families honor their deceased loved ones with offerings, processions, and celebrations. Similarly, the Chinese Qingming Festival involves the cleaning and decorating of graves and offering food to ancestors.

The Egyptian Festival of the Dead serves as a powerful reminder of the universality of death and the enduring human desire to connect with and honor those who have passed. It highlights the importance of community, memory, and the belief in a life beyond death, themes that continue to shape our understanding of existence.

The Egyptian Festival of the Dead, or the Wag Festival, was a profound expression of the ancient Egyptians' beliefs about death and the afterlife. Through rituals, offerings, and celebrations, they honored their ancestors and ensured their well-being in the afterlife. The festival reflected the Egyptians' deep respect for the cyclical nature of life and death, emphasizing the continuity of existence. The legacy of the Wag Festival endures, reminding us of the universal human experience of death and the enduring connections we maintain with those who have passed.

  • 2024 Buck Moon!

    Buckmoon24

The Witch's Guide to the Full Buck Moon 2024

Hello, magical friends! 🌕✨ As we approach July 21, 2024, we prepare to welcome the Full Buck Moon, a powerful time for witches and all those who feel connected to the cycles of the moon. This full moon, named for the time of year when the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full growth, is ripe with potent energy for personal growth, manifestation, and abundance. In this guide, we'll explore the significance of the Full Buck Moon, its rising time, and various ways to harness its magical energy.

The Full Buck Moon: Significance and Symbolism

The Full Buck Moon holds deep symbolism tied to growth, strength, and renewal. As the antlers of bucks reach their peak during this time, it serves as a powerful metaphor for personal and spiritual development. This full moon is an excellent time to focus on:

Personal Growth: Just as the bucks grow their antlers, we can use this period to foster our own growth—whether it’s personal, professional, or spiritual.

Manifestation: The energy of the Full Buck Moon is ideal for setting intentions and manifesting your desires. It’s a time to plant seeds that will grow and flourish in the coming months.

Abundance: This moon phase is associated with abundance and prosperity. It’s a great time to focus on attracting wealth and opportunities into your life.

Strength and Resilience: Like the strong antlers of the bucks, this period encourages us to build our inner strength and resilience.

The Full Buck Moon in 2024 will rise on July 21 at approximately 6:19 a.m. EST. To make the most of its energy, plan your rituals and activities around this time. Watching the moonrise can be a beautiful and meditative experience, helping you connect more deeply with its energy.

Preparing for the Full Buck Moon

    1. Create a Sacred Space. Cleanse your space using sage, palo santo, or your preferred cleansing method. This helps to clear any negative energy and create a welcoming environment for your rituals. Set up an altar with symbols of growth and abundance, such as antlers, green crystals (like aventurine or jade), and fresh greenery.

    2. Gather Your Tools: Candles: Use green or gold candles to represent growth and prosperity. Crystals: Incorporate crystals like citrine, pyrite, and clear quartz to amplify your intentions. Herbs: Use herbs like basil, mint, and chamomile, which are associated with abundance and manifestation.

    3. Set Your Intentions: Take some time to reflect on what you want to manifest during this lunar cycle. Write down your goals and desires on a piece of paper.

Rituals and Practices for the Full Buck Moon

    1. Full Moon Meditation: Find a quiet space where you can sit comfortably and meditate. Visualize the energy of the Full Buck Moon surrounding you, filling you with strength and vitality. Focus on your breath and let go of any tension or negative thoughts.

    2. Moon Bathing: Moon bathing is a simple yet powerful way to absorb the moon’s energy. Find a place where you can sit or lie under the moonlight. Close your eyes and imagine the moon’s light filling you with its nurturing energy. You can also place your crystals and tools outside to cleanse and charge them with lunar energy.

    3. Manifestation Ritual: Write down your intentions on a piece of paper. Light a green or gold candle and hold the paper in your hands. Focus on your desires and visualize them coming to fruition. When you’re ready, burn the paper in the candle flame (safely) as a symbol of releasing your intentions to the universe.

    4. Abundance Spell: Create an abundance spell jar using herbs, crystals, and symbols of prosperity. Fill a small jar with items like basil, mint, citrine, and a small coin. Seal the jar and place it on your altar or somewhere you will see it often. Each time you see the jar, take a moment to reaffirm your intentions for abundance.

    5. Nature Walk and Offerings: Take a walk in nature, preferably in a place where you can see the moonrise. Collect natural items like leaves, flowers, and stones. As you walk, reflect on your intentions and the things you are grateful for. Leave a small offering to the earth as a token of gratitude.

    6. Full Moon Tarot Spread: Use a tarot spread designed for the full moon to gain insights into your current situation and the path ahead. A simple three-card spread can focus on what to release, what to embrace, and what to expect in the coming lunar cycle.

Incorporating the Full Buck Moon into Your Daily Life

    1. Gratitude Journaling: Start a gratitude journal where you write down three things you are grateful for each day. This practice can help you stay focused on the positive aspects of your life and attract more abundance.

    2. Affirmations: Create a set of affirmations related to growth, strength, and abundance. Repeat these affirmations daily to reinforce your intentions and attract positive energy.

    3. Gardening: If you have a garden, spend time tending to your plants. Gardening can be a meditative practice that helps you connect with the earth and the cycles of nature. Planting new seeds or nurturing existing plants can symbolize your intentions for growth.

The Full Buck Moon is a powerful time to harness the energies of growth, strength, and abundance. Whether you celebrate alone or with others, taking time to honor this lunar phase can bring profound insights and transformations. By aligning yourself with the natural rhythms of the moon, you can enhance your magical practice and manifest your deepest desires.

So, gather your tools, set your intentions, and let the magic of the Full Buck Moon illuminate your path. Happy Full Buck Moon, everyone! 🌕✨

  • Autumn Glimmers!

    Fall-foliage

    Autumn Glimmers
    by Khouzhan Morgan

Hello there Spellmaker readers and a welcome to the month of September!

As the days grow cooler and the nights grow longer, our mother earth has begun to shed her gown of luscious green to showcase her cloak of crimson, gold and sienna. Everywhere we are surrounded by the energy of harvest, change and transformation. Fall has always been my favorite time of year, and it simply fills my heart with warmth and my soul with glimmers of joy.

Glimmers are the direct opposite of negative triggers; instead of imparting negative feelings, glimmers gift us with hope, happiness and a feeling that every little thing is gonna be alright. (In the words of the late great Bob Marley).

With this season of change, we can reflect upon those little sparks that make life worth living. What glimmers light up your world, dear reader? What are the things that ensnare your senses just for a moment and give you a perfect sense of awe? In a world where we are bombarded with bad news on television, the internet and social media, it is crucial to take some moments every day just to breathe, find some wonder and just BE.

The arrival of fall is what allows me to embrace those little moments of happiness. The trees are awash with flame hued colors, the spooky glow of candles illuminates ripe picked pumpkins, and the scent and aromatic spices permeates the air. The warm sunshine juxtaposed with the crisp chilly nights leading up to the autumn equinox, shows us that balance is lovely, and yet just a season, in the great circle of life.

Back to school vibes are everywhere, including our Spellmaker home office! Mambo Sam is preparing to teach some very valuable magical lessons once again on Patreon. Get out your wands and parchments, folks, and get ready for “witch school” 2.0!!

I hope you are all as excited as I am to do some learning, find more glimmers in every day life, and enjoy all of the wonders that Autumn has in store for each and every one of us!! Our Spellmaker family sends you jubilation, inspiration and transformation this lovely fall season!!

  • Venus and the Sun

So I wanted to talk a bit about a Venus and Sun conjunction we have recently experienced in the sign of Libra.

First, what does all that astro mumbo jumbo mean? Well…the sun is the sign of the self, your identity. When someone asks you what your "sign" is the answer most people give is the sign that the Sun was astrologically transiting in the heavens on the day they were born. For example, if your birthday is today, October 27, you were born when the sun was in the sign of Scorpio. But the sun, as a rule astrological, translates to the self.

Venus is the planet that rules love and romantic love especially. Also anything that gives us pleasure-lovely art, delicious food, music, beautiful poetry, falls under the gaze of Venus. And Libra, in the 12 houses of the zodiac, rules the 7th house, or the house of partnerships.

So this sun and Venus conjunction in Libra on a very universal level, is giving humankind an opportunity to take stock of our personal relationships. What relationships nourish or deplete you? If you are single, what traits do you want to attract ( or avoid) in a potential partner? How do you approach relationships? Is there room for improvement in your own behavior? Do you and your current partner need to make some changes to improve your relationship?

These are all things that have been coming to and will continue to be, in the forefront as this conjunction finishes out in the heavens. And don't be afraid to put your intentions out there for the things you want in relationships right now!

  • Happy National Black Cat Day!

As a lifelong Halloween lover and cat lover, I am delighted to wish everyone a Happy Black Cat Day 🙂

I have always, until recently, had a black cat in my brood. Black cats also show up in my life to bring me messages from my ancestors. I don't take this as anything sinister. As a matter if fact, I feel like it is a message for me expressed in a way that I will pay attention, which is pretty darned clever, in my humble opinion!

Of course, all that black cat nonsense about their being signs of bad luck, etc…well that is just a bunch of nonsense! But legitimately, Black cats tend to be euthanized in animal shelters at a higher rate than felines of other colors. This fact has always been so heartbreaking ro me!

I have always found little black cats to be the most magically inclined and loyal! ( Though let's face it…kitties all seem to be rather otherworldly, don't they?)

Many shelters in the U.S. hold adoptions on black cats during the month of October as an effort to keep them from being harmed. I have noticed recently that most of my friends that have gotten cats or kittens in the past few years have adopted a black cat. Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Thackery Binx from Hocus Pocus were, I think, good P.R. for black cats everywhere  🙂 And though I have never had one who speaks "human"- I have noticed they tend to be the chatty sort, as far as cats are concerned 😉

So, in honor of this spooky season, I bid you all Happy Haunting, and may you all be lucky enough to be loved by a little black cat…or many!

  • Lammas

Hello there 🙂 Oh Lammas, the first harvest, how I love this time of year. When humid August clings to the air and clutches the earth in its heady embrace as if to envelop the world before letting go.

Cicadas sing through the heavy stillness that is late summertime and the night sky always takes on a desaturated shade of the darkest blue.

Lammas is on many Pagan calenders for August 1 or 2, but it is really more of a two week process culminating in when the sun actually reaches 15 degrees Leo. (which happens to be today)

This, of course, comes just before our next full moon which will occur on 8/11. That is alot of energy, and astrologically this is the point in the year where we can really boost our manifestation energy!

I wish you all a very happy and health lammas and a wonderful start to the fall season. Ayibobo!

  • Magic

I've just received word that Olivia Newton-John has passed away! For a girl who grew up watching Grease over and over, can sing every song from the movie by heart, and aspired ( like we all did) to be Sandy ( although in truth I'm more like Rizzo) I am just heartbroken! Olivia will always be a part of my childhood, a singer who was sweet enough for little girl to emulate, but still beautiful and talented enough to be a genuine inspiration.

I was feeling so nostalgic, and I dove into some of Newton-John's non Grease songs that I have always loved.

I have been struggling lately with many things. Most of all I feel like I just had another birthday and I have SO many goals I want to reach. But after some serious  relationships stuff and health issues that have prohibited me from working for awhile, I was feeling a little despondent as of late. Like HOW will I ever do the things I want to do in my life. Some days it just seems impossible that I will ever feel productive again.

I have written many times about signs the lwa show us, and of course about what a huge impact they have had on every area of my life. But this was a big one. And I suppose I have Olivia Newton-John (and Erzulie Freda, whom I serve) to thank for this epiphany.

All in PINK were the lyrics to the Olivia Newton-John song "Magic", which I'll be honest, I never knew. Until today. And I knew.

I know I'm not alone in mourning Olivia Newton-John. A generation of girls turned women were so impacted by her iconic role in Grease. My heart goes out to her loved ones, who I hope know that Olivia and her beautiful voice will never be forgotten.

And for any one of you who have some spellwork out there,or any of us who consistently do services and magical work who might be feeling a little bit meh, a little bit confused, aimless-or even like giving up…these lyrics are for you:

    Come take my hand

    You should know me

I've always been in your mind

You know I will be kind

    I'll be guiding you

Building your dream has to start now

There's no other road to take

    You won't make a mistake

    I'll be guiding you

You have to believe we are magic

Nothin' can stand in our way

You have to believe we are magic

Don't let your aim ever stray

And if all your hopes survive

    Destiny will arrive

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

From where I stand, you are home free

    The planets align so rare

    There's promise in the air

    And I'm guiding you

Through every turn I'll be near you

    I'll come anytime you call

I'll catch you when you fall

    I'll be guiding you

You have to believe we are magic

Nothin' can stand in our way

You have to believe we are magic

Don't let your aim ever stray

And if all your hopes survive

    Destiny will arrive

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

You have to believe we are magic

Nothin' can stand in our way

You have to believe we are magic

Don't let your aim ever stray

And if all your hopes survive

    Destiny will arrive

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

  • Jupiter retrograde: What does it mean?

    Hello there,

I just want to touch on some astrology for any of you who are interested. In the past few years, I have noticed a huge increase in astrology by the public at large, and especially for anyone interested in magical matters.

One thing that I have really noticed is the discussion of retrograde planets. The problematic thing about planetary retrogrades is that there can be alot of fear mongering involved, which can send people into a panic. So I am here today to tell you: STOP THE INSANITY!!!

Planetary retrogrades have been going on as long as the planets have been in the heavens, and awareness of  retrograde planets has always been there for students of astrology.

Many of us (myself included) have planets retrograde in a natal, or birth chart. Retrogrades are an  inevitable, like the sun setting, the seasons changing, and natural part of the cosmic consciousness.

The KEY to navigating planetary retrogrades is to know what to try to avoid and what to focus more upon during the retrograde period. The same way you know that you need to wear a winter coat in cold months, or know that you need to turn your headlights on to drive your car in the dark, is the way to approach a planetary retrogrades.

So what do we focus on during Jupiter retrograde? Well, Jupiter is the planet of expansion, and in retrograde it can constrict areas concerned with the 9th house, such as travel, moving abroad, higher education, such as enrolling in college or seeking funds for education. And just as the heirophant in tarot can signify a teacher in the literal sense, he can also rule teachings of an esoteric nature. So subjects of religion and spirituality can be affected by a Jupiter retrograde.

Does this mean NOT to follow a spiritual path during the retrograde? Absolutely not. But taking time to really do some soul searching about your beliefs or practices, or actually doing a deep dive into spiritual subjects you want to learn about so you can expand on it eventually, that is right up Jupiter retrograde's cosmic alley!

As with any retrograde, going inward is always a good idea. But does this mean you should just NOT enroll in that college course you have had your eye on? Of course not- it is just that during retrogrades allowing extra time and understanding margins for error or delay is always the wisest course of action.

You can always look into your personal natal chart also to investigate if a planet's retrograde is making aspects to any of your personal planets. (Your sun or moon sign, or your Mercury Mars or Venus placements, respectively.)

So, that is just my 2 cents on the upcoming Jupiter retrograde, which will occur July 28th in ♈  Aries during the Leo new moon,, and move into Pisces in late October until stationing direct on November 24th.

This retrograde advises us to be wise and listen to our inner teacher as we progress through it.

  • Happy Moon Day 2022

Happy Moon Day to one and all 🙂

Today is the anniversary of mankind's first moon landing. In 1969, millions watched Neil Armstrong take those first steps and a new era was born.

I love that there is a day to celebrate the moon because honestly, nothing (except maybe HALLOWEEN) makes me feel more magical than that mystical luminary in the night!

I have always been fascinated with the moon's pull over the tides and over the human psyche. I love her in all of her phases, and I love observing what occursas she travels the heavens through the astrological signs.

The moon has been my constant companion in life. There is a comforting familiarity about the moon as she changes every night, and with every season of the year.

No matter where I have been in the world, the moon was always there,  pulling the tides and lighting up the sky.

And I wish all of you a beautiful relationship with the moon, just as I have been lucky enough to have.

"The moon, like a flower in heaven’s high bower, With silent delight sits and smiles on the night." – William Blake
