Belief Systems, Attitude and Change by Jan Engels Smith

I, like many, spent several years in therapy. I had varying degrees of success, but I still viewed my childhood as something that wounded me terribly. I spent much of my adult life healing.

I was in a workshop, one day, and we were asked to come up with a happy memory from our childhood and to hold it in our minds as we continued with the exercise. I searched and searched for a happy memory. If an event presented itself with even an inkling of happiness, it proceeded to run itself out in my mind to a disastrously unhappy conclusion. I had no purely happy memory. I, of course, felt like I was the only person in the whole group who could not get a happy memory, which magnified my unworthiness issues. It was awful. I realized that instead of healing in my years of therapy, I had learned to understand what had happened at an intellectual and behavioral level, but I was still feeling much pain. I had a hole in my soul, and my spirit felt fragmented. As time went on, my spiritual life developed more, and I was introduced to extremely different philosophies from those I had been raised with. New awareness filled my being. I started to understand that I had choice in this earth-walk, and that the experiences I had as a child were ones I had chosen in order to develop my soul and myself.

I began to review my life from the perspective of choice. I had the choice to view my life’s experiences with judgments of blame and remorse, or to view them as opportunities for growth. Eventually I saw the bigger picture of my life’s experiences. This "eagle vision," as I was later taught to call it, is the ability to see personal experiences distantly but holistically.

What was my soul working on in this lifetime? What were the patterns? What was I continually recreating in my life at a subconscious level that allowed me the opportunity to choose a higher level of being? Was my soul evolving in a good way, or was I stuck in my own predetermined drama? Bitterness, victimization, anger, and grudges are all choices that trap the soul and prevent it from growing. They inhibit the soul like a jail inhibits freedom. Understanding this, I consciously chose to see my entire childhood differently and to view my life as experiences that promoted the choice for my soul to evolve into a higher state of being.

Years later, I found myself in a group setting again. This time, we were asked to write a story about an event in our childhood. I know that the intention of this assignment was to process again the events that had led us all to counseling. But this time I had a totally different perspective.

I wrote a story about a great fishing trip we had taken as a family and how much fun we had, how my family had such a spirit of adventure, and how many fabulous opportunities I had as a child. It was amazing what poured out of me. I had such a profound realization. I knew that my past had not changed, but my perspective on it had. The American psychologist William James once observed, "People can alter their lives by altering their attitudes." Those unhappy negative experiences, which I had dwelled on for so many years, took on the new flavor of being opportunities to learn how to love myself and others, how to claim my own worthiness, how to step away from the judgments of what others had done to me, and how to be thankful for the success in developing my own soul.

This was a huge step forward in my own development. It was not the writing assignment that caused this shift in focus, but it brought it to my awareness. In the time between the two workshops, I had chosen to change my belief system. I had adopted a philosophy that created healing. With this shift in my perception, I was able to internalize at an intellectual, emotional, behavioral, and spiritual level. My life has been extremely different ever since.

Another powerful example of attitude occurred when I was working with a client. I greeted my client as he arrived for his appointment, and realized immediately that he had a severe problem. His head was down, and his arms dangled at his sides. He was completely slumped over, and his eyes were closed. When I asked what was wrong, I received no answer. He came through the door, slowly, very slowly, dragging his feet and holding on to the railing with extreme effort and difficulty. It took him fifteen minutes to get in the door and to the chair in my office where he finally collapsed.

Eyes still closed, slumped in the chair to almost a fetal position, chin resting on his chest. He sat exhausted from the effort of entering my office. I was being shown, quite literally, how terrible he felt-the fatigue, the pain, the exhaustion of movement, the weariness of being alive. I watched him with concern. After a few moments of sitting in silence and listening to his arduous breathing, I asked a few questions but got a barely audible response, "I can’t, it is too hard."

I finally asked my client to say the words, "I can" for one minute. I said with authority, "Begin."

He started mumbling the words, slowly repeating the phrase as directed. After about 25 seconds, he opened his eyes and his body started to move. His shoulders came up, he straightened his back, his head came up, and he actually looked at me. His voice was now stronger and clearer. At the end of the minute, his entire attitude, disposition, and posture had changed. It was amazing.

We then talked about what had created his burden of depression. It was fear-his fear of the future and of not being able to handle the changes and the challenges confronting him. His fear monopolized his thoughts, literally crippling him with fatigue. He had been saying, "I can’t, I can’t, I can’t," and those words were destroying his life.

This simple experiment to change the negative thought and the words he was saying to himself, changed his entire energy. My client literally transformed in front of my eyes. His life situation was still physically the same, but his attitude toward it was different. We continued the session with a new hope.

Granted, this did not solve his problems, but it confronted the "I can’t" attitude, which was destroying his life. He had been physically displaying the manifestation of his thoughts. I had a choice either to enable his woe, comforting his obvious distress, or remind him of his other choice. The task was not mine, but his. He had to experience firsthand the power of his thoughts and how he could be in control. His physical condition was in direct response to what he had been saying to himself.          Thoughts will either support you or destroy you. Try the following experiment with yourself:

Every morning when you wake up start saying,"I can"

  • Mambo’s Blog — Pink Bubble Meditation!

    Hey,

If this somehow got by you, please go check out this post on Mambo Sam’s Blog! It fits right in with our card of the week !

Greetings everyone!   I did hear from several of you that you tried The Pink Bubble meditation!   I am so glad that you did.  It is easy to use and something you can use in conjunction with your love spell work or any other spell work.

Now I wanted to share some things with you about Raja Yoga meditation.  This is a little more complex but it can still be so very useful to you if you give it some time and try it.  Many times during our spell work, we have a tendency to get frustrated, negative, and just start to feel like nothing is going our way.  Well, as you know, just feeling that way has a tendency to bring a negative spin to your spell work and can cause ill effects!  So then we are in this vicious cycle of not feeling good because things aren’t happening for us and things aren’t happening for us because we are not feeling good about them!

On our forum and in our blogs we discuss many different ways to cope with these feelings.  Meditation is another coping mechanism that can help you clear out the negativity and make a peaceful path to getting your goals!

In a recent post on Sister Bridget’s Blog there was a discussion about "relinquishing control."  Meditation is also a great way to achieve that goal.  When we truly  meditate and set ourselves free, even if it is just for a few minutes, we set the stage for positive energy flow and stop trying to control every little thing in our lives.

    Peace and Joy!  Mambo Sam

The light and peace envelopes me and the waves of peace and light shine like a lighthouse……………………………………… This is the wonderful journey of self discovery.

    Raja Yoga Meditation philosophy

The basis for attaining an experience in raja yoga meditation in to understand the self and the mind. The human mind is the most creative, powerful and wonderful "instrument" we possess. Using this energy called mind we have been able to search the deepest oceans, send humans to the moon and scan the molecular fabric of the building blocks of nature. But have we found our true self? We have become the most educated and civilized society in our history, but are we civil towards each other?

The soul has three main faculties; the mind or consciousness, the intellect and the subconscious.

Thoughts flow from the sub conscious mind to the conscious mind. Feelings and emotions form in accordance with the montage of thoughts flowing in the mind. Therefore our state of mind at any given moment is determined by the thoughts in our consciousness, and also with the feelings that we associate with those thoughts. Since our sub consciousness contains all our previous thoughts and experiences, it is necessary to selectively control the flow of thoughts that emerges from the sub conscious mind.

The intellect is the controller which is used to discriminate so that only positive and benevolent thoughts flow into our mind. With meditation or deep contemplation, the individual is able to strengthen and sharpen the intellect. The end result is a constant state of well being. If we are able to understand the self as the source of energy that creates our feelings, then the following will become our aims.

Become aware of our state of mind and of the thoughts that flows into the mind from our subconscious.
Strengthen the intellect so that the individual can discriminate and thereby only allow positive and peaceful thoughts to flow into the mind.
Through this process of self development the individual develops more control over the mind.

Dadi Prakashmani, Dadi Janki and Dadi Gulzar are the spiritual leaders of the Raja Yoga meditation organization. They are the embodiment of soul consciousness, filled with love, light and happiness.

These meditations have been taken from the knowledge as taught by the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga meditation organization. Raja Yoga meditation organization

  • The Pink Bubble Meditation

Hello everyone!  Have you attempted meditation?  Meditation has been around for centuries and is used for many different manifestations of life:  health, love, anger management, relaxation, etc.  There are literally thousands of ways to meditate and assist in the manifestation of your goals.

In spell work we are often trying to attain a particular goal:  It may be love, money, a job, etc.  Whatever our reason for doing the spell work, adding in some creative meditations can certainly be a way of assisting your situation.

Over the upcoming weeks, I would like to share with you some of my favorite meditation techniques. I hope you enjoy them!  The meditation technique below, the "Pink Bubble Meditation", is a wonderful meditation to use if you are working with our favorite love lwa, Erzulie Freda or working with pink candle magick or any other love magick.  🙂

    Pink Bubble Meditation Technique

This meditation is simple and wonderfully effective.
    Exercise:

    • Sit or lie down comfortably, close your eyes and breathe deeply, slowly, and naturally. Gradually relax and feel this meditation taking you deeper and deeper.
    • Imagine something that you would like to manifest. Imagine that is already happened.
    • Picture it as clearly as possibly in your mind. Now in your mind’s eye surround your fantasy with a pink bubble; put your goal inside the bubble. Pink is the color associated with the heart, and if this color vibrations surrounds whatever you visualize, it bring to you only that which is in perfect affinity with your being.
    • The third step is to let go of your bubble and imagine it floating off into the universe, still containing your vision. This symbolizes that you are emotionally ‘letting go” of it.
    • Now it’s free to float around the universe, attracting and gathering energy for it’s manifestation.

  • Online Teaching to Resume Soon

Good morning everyone!  I wanted to let you all know that we will resume the online teaching classes soon!  I have worked up a new format that I think will be much more effective in getting the information to you all AND allowing for both some social time and discussion time.  🙂

There seemed to be a general idea that when I suspended classes that I was angry because of the way class was going.  That isn’t quite true.  More than anything I was frustrated with the format that I was using that didn’t allow me to get as much information to you as I hoped.  I felt that I was turning into a "sit down and shut up" teacher and that is not what I want for you all!!   You aren’t in kindergarten and no one is going to have to clean erasers after class!

However, I did start to feel the frustrations of some of the students and myself.  Therefore, I have set about to build a better mousetrap.  Just a bit more tweaking and I will introduce the new format, probably in about two weeks.

I miss the classes!!  I miss the interaction with all of you.  We will be back at it soon.  (And if you aren’t registered for class, why not????  LOL.  Email Berkeley at office@spellmaker.com and get instructions for signing up.)

  • The Godfather

Hey everyone.  As many of you know from the 2007 Albuquerque Voodoo Convention, I have finished a large portion of my New Orleans Voodoo training.  This is of course not to say that I don’t still have a lot to learn because obviously I do.  But taking my position beside my wife, Marran Sam, as head of our Voodoo family is something that I take very seriously.

So you might wonder, what IS a Parran?  Technically the term means "godfather" – this term is adapted for use in the New Orleans Voodoo heirarchy to mean the spiritual Father of a particular Voodoo family.  Parran is the title that is used by the public and followers of the family who are not initiated into the family.  (Actual initiates of the family use the term "MaPere" – my father – when referring to me.  Interestingly in most Cajun families, MaPere refers to the actual grandfather of the family.  This is supposed to be taken from parents referring to their own fathers to their children as "my father" to explain to a child who the grandfather of the family is. However, the term MaPere is used by the children of a Voodoo family to describe their spiritual father. It’s a little confusing, but makes sense when you think about it.)

Another question probably is, what does a Parran do?  First off, I am very active in our business, www.spellmaker.com.  Besides my spiritual duties for the family, I assist in consecrating of items, shipping, working on the website, ordering, product development, packaging, and general day-to-day operations.  A lot of my participation in the business is much more behind the scenes than Mambo Sam (Marran Sam).  You may not see me but I am always there!

Marran and I work together almost every day.  We are blessed in that we work well together and complement each other very well in our work ethics.

Right now we are working on developing new packaging systems for products so that they arrive in the best possible condition to you.  Additionally, we are planning the 2008 Albuquerque Voodoo Convention.  I hope to meet many more of you this year.  I am looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.

Until next time, take care everyone and many blessings to you all, Parran Matt.

  • New! Card of the Week!

    OK , Gang!

So Sister Candelaria and I  have been wracking our brains really hard on how to help clients have a bit more of a positive outlook on things. I know being positive can be difficult at times , but more and more I feel like some folks take the path of least resistance right into negativity. Its so hard to watch, because we care so much about each ane every one of you! Soooooo, this is what I came up with. Every Sunday I will get out one of my decks and ask for a card that will offer guidance to clients for the upcoming week. I will post that card here, and my interpretation. As you go thru your week, think about the card and the advice or lesson or awareness that has been presented and how you might apply it to your life. Any situation or aspect of your life is fair game…. it does not have to just relate to your case. Remember, you are *not* your case!  You are soooo much more!

As your week goes by, as you see how the advice in the card has helped you or has applied to your life, and how the knowledge from the card may have helped you, please post a comment here on the blog. (see the small link at the bottom of this post that says "comment’) The client who posts the most insightful comment  by the following Sunday will get a free 5 card tarot reading! The winner of the free reading will be posted when I post the next Card of the Week.

    So, lets get started!

Card of the Week for March 8th:

The deck I chose was the Wisdom for Healing Cards by Carolyn Myss. You can see these cards listed in my amazon.com store if you havent seen them before. They are quite beautiful and have many wonderful insights!

Well, um, for the first card its clearly not an easy one. But remember, your conscious effort could pay off in a free reading!

The card’s name is Relinquish Control.

The back of the card says: Todays Lesson: Identify one person you feel the need to control, and think about why that power is so essential to you. What do you fear if your hold is released? Your goal: to recognise how much stress is generated in your body through the need to control someone else.

Wow. I trust there is a reason that this card has come up first for us, and I look forward to your commencts about how this card and its goal effects you in the coming week.

    Light and love,

    Sister Bridget

  • Facing Fears

This article is all about the saying you frequently hear Spellmaker staff saying….that "the only way out is through". Sometimes, when we are faced with unpleasantness, processing, the dark night of the soul, we just want to throw up our hands and give up, when the very thing we need to do is just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Hopefully, this article will help shed some light on why we need to do this 😉 Light and Love, Sister Bridget

    Facing Fears by T. Dorsey

What value is there in facing your fears?  What is there to gain in reliving painful experiences?  Does it change anything to acknowledge you have been hurt?

The point of facing your fears is that it allows you to eventually move through it.  But before you move through it, you have to acknowledge the pain.  You have to allow yourself to feel what you are feeling.  You have to allow yourself to feel all the emotions that come up for you as you face your fears. No matter what those feelings may be. Usually there are a myriad of emotions to deal with when you confront your fears, especially if you have avoided dealing with them for years. You may have feelings of anger, resentment, frustration, helplessness, vulnerability and rage.  It may be helpful to remember this phrase,

“ If it is coming up, then it is on its way out.”

So how do you begin to face your fears?  You do it by to telling your story.  Write it out.  Chronicle exactly what happened. At first you may think you are unable to recall all the details, especially if it happened a long time ago.  However, as you write, you may recall memories long forgotten.  It is also important to describe how you feel or felt about what happened.  Describe in detail what emotions come up for you. Once you allow yourself to feel what you are feeling, you can get to the other side.

The story I had to tell to face my fears was about my dad.  After he passed away I came to realize that I still struggled with facets of our relationship.  Initially, I really did not see the point in relieving all the ways my dad disappointed me. He was dead now.  What was the point?  What could be the benefit in reliving those painful memories?  Despite these objections, I began to write my story.

I recounted the countless times my dad did not show through, as promised.  It was a hard story to tell even to myself.  At times I wept uncontrollably.  At other times my rage was so intense it was palatable.  It was incredible to me how many different emotions I felt and how real they all were, as if the events I was retelling had just happened moments ago instead of over a decade ago.

What was the point in that painful exercise?  I did indeed move through those feelings and came out on the other side.

On that other side I had some new insights. One insight I discovered was how stuffing those feelings about my dad, over time, impacted my personality, my choices and my relationships.  By retelling that story I also gained an entirely new perspective on that painful experience.  Eventually, after allowing myself to feel all those emotions I had been stuffing for so many years, I began to feel lighter like a weight had been lifted.

What happened next was really unexpected.  I found that I had transformed into a higher version of myself, a more authentic version of who I really am.  This new insight even made me feel grateful for that painful experience because I liked who I grew to be because of it.

Facing your fears enables you to rid yourself of buried emotions.  By coming to face-to-face with what you are afraid of, you are able to free yourself.  You also offer yourself an opportunity to grow from the experience.  In the end, you may discover you like YOU not in spite of what happened to you but because of what happened to you.

  • 2008 Voodoo Convention Planning and Faith!

Greetings, everyone!   I am really excited to be getting into high gear planning the 2008 Voodoo Convention here in Albuquerque.

For the 2008 Convention we will be studying a lot more about Haitian and African Vodou.  During the 2007 we spent more time with our New Orleans Voodoo heritage.  We will, of course, be studying more about New Orleans Voodoo, but our primary focus will be on Vodou.

Planning the classes is really getting to be fun and I cannot wait to teach you all!  We will be learning Vodou songs, part of the Priye Guinea (the long African prayer that is recited before most Vodou rituals, deep service to the lwa, and much more.

In thinking about the convention, I cannot help but remember my own visits to and Vodou initiation in Haiti.  It is definitely a place to remember.  The people in Jacmel, Haiti are colorful, bright, smart, friendly, and serve the lwa with both dignity and passion.  There are many lessons to be learned from these people because they continue to serve the lwa with faith and confidence even in the most trying of circumstances.  Frankly, most of us would fold up under the conditions in which these people live.

Yet, they serve the lwa daily.  They continue to dedicate their lives to the practice of Vodou regardless of outcome of their hopes and dreams and petitions to the lwa.  They do not waver in their service nor in their dedication.  They are not practitioners of fairweather faith; in fact, the worse the weather, the stronger their faith.  Taking a page from their book would do us all a world of good.

Most of us are petitioning for a better job, a partner to come into our lives, or an enemy to go away.  Most of us are not wondering where our next meal is coming from or if we will have money to send our children to school (no public schools in Haiti) or if we have the basic necessities of life.  However, time and time again I hear that we are "losing faith" in our spell work!  We don’t "see results" right away and are ready to throw away our spell work, our faith, and our dedication to the lwa at the drop of a hat!  Indeed, looking to our Haitian brothers and sisters for a shining example of faith can do us all a world of good.

Probably the most uplifting thing is the JOY that these people derive from their service to the lwa.  The picture below is one I took in Jacmel during a Vodou celebration.  Feel the joy!

    Love, Mambo Sam
