  • Summer Cinema

Recently we had a heat wave here in Pa. Having this kind of weather for several days in a row generally reduces my itty bitty little house to a stuffy little sauna/toaster oven.

The only indoor respite from this kind of weather is to retreat with a cold drink to a dark room with air conditioning and something fun to watch.

It got me thinking about how many movies and television shows contain magic nowadays. I feel like that wasn't always a thing-I mean-it was always my thing-but a thing for more mainstream stuff? Meh-not so much.

Besides that, seeing voodoo/hoodoo on screen is even more of a rarity. It is often portrayed in a bad light, or in a very exaggerated manner.

Still, sometimes the depictions get it right, or somewhat right, and it just makes my heart sing. It makes me happy that this wonderful practice is getting some acknowledgement and exposure.

Here are some shows and movies that feature voodoo or voodoo themes, good, bad, or indifferent:

    American Horror Story-Coven

    The Princess and the Frog

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

    Angel Heart

    Skeleton Key

    Criminal Minds-Corazon

    Bones-The Man in the Morgue

Orange is the New Black-various episodes with Gloria's backstory

*This is by no means a complete list but just represents shows and movies that I have personally seen.

I would love to hear about any other depictions of voodoo on screen at morgan@spellmaker.com

  • Days of Strawberries and Roses

So today is the last "supermoon" of 2021 and will be at peak fullness at about 2:40 PM EST.

As a lifelong lover of all things pink, I love that this moon can often have a glow as if viewed through rose colored glasses. πŸ’•πŸŒšπŸŒΉWhat a fitting way to describe that lunar effect on our emotions and the world at large! πŸ€—

In fact this moon is known as the strawberry moon, the rose moon, and even the honey mead moon. June always did mean the yummiest berries and the most beautiful and plentiful roses of the year here in the northeast US.

In the latest edition of collecting random facts I learned a little something today. Mead, a medieval  fermented beverage brewed from honey, was the celebratory beverage of choice for wedding feasts. And that the aptly named post wedding couples getaway the "honeymoon" may very likely have received that name because June is traditionally the month for weddings.

It's a great time to charge divination tools, altar accessories and crystals under the glow of the Summer Solstice sun AND the full moon.

That being said, I should get to that. All this energy has me kind of inspired. And I suspect I know someone who would love some pretty pink rosesπŸ˜‰.

  • Here comes the Rain Again

At last the glory of summertime is upon us with her long languishing sunny days and her warm nights that brazenly hum with inviting expectation. But today we have cool rain.

I never lament dreary days in the summer. I love the energy of a thunderstorm, the way the downpour sounds on the roof, and the peaceful stillness it affords. Nature makes sure that everything outside keeps growing, and inside it allows my imagination to blossom in solitude.

I love to light candles "in case the lights go out" all the while knowing I am just finding an excuse to burn them.

There is magic there, in the rain, in the isolation, the way water washes over everything and makes it clean.

The misty fog hovers along our rural roads like the whispers of a spirit, beckoning us to uncover what is unknown or even  frightening to us.

Indeed, sometimes we are lucky enough to spy a beautiful rainbow, in all her glorious shades, her colors painting the sky in hope and endless possibility.

I try to "catch" rain water for Ayido Wedo, the rainbow serpent and wife of the great Papa Damballah. I truly believe that these great spirits are like the foundation of the Earth herself. Ever present, solid, and quietly supporting us as we surge- unaware through day to day life. I am so very grateful for them.

What about nature nspires you to  be fanciful, grateful or magical? We love to hear your stories at customerservice@spellmaker.com.

In service and with love and light,

    Khouzhan Morgan

  • Free Classes Going Great!

    Hello everyone!

It probably comes as no surprise to many of you that I love to teach!  At one point in time, I actually thought that my career would be that of a professor.  Life took me in a different direction, but I have had my chance at teaching many times in my life:  I have taught drama, karate, English, writing, acting, and, of course, Vodou/voodoo and other magickal subjects.

We have recently started up our public classes again here at www.spellmaker.com!  I am happy to be back in the teaching saddle again.  :-)  We have started out with a series of classes on getting to know and live with the Vodou spirits, the lwa, les lois, or the loa!  Class has been fun and rewarding.  It's always great to get to meet and teach both new and old friends!

As we move along, we will be teaching many different metaphysical and occult subjects.  While Vodou/voodoo is our main focus most of the time, we will also teach witchcraft, hoodoo, root work, and other things as we continue on.

These particular classes are completely free – all are welcome!  As we move along, many subjects will be covered.  We would love for you to join us.   Our format is different than it used to be. We used to be in a typing-only chat room.  We did have fun!  Now we have a fancy Adobe-based classroom where you can actually see me, but you remain anonymous (unless you choose otherwise).  Also, the classes are recorded in case you miss a class and don't want to be behind on the next class.  I am including a link here to the very first recorded class of this series so that you can get an idea of the class structure.

If you desire to see the class, just click here to go to the recording.

We do ask that you register for class if you desire to attend.  Registration is simple, free, and no one is going to use your information to try to sell you anything!

If you desire to register for class, just click here to register.

I do hope that you will join us!  We have fun and you are welcome to participate as little or as much as you desire.

    Love to all,

  • Happy Summer Solstice 2014!

    Hey all!

Wishing each of you a very happy Summer Solstice today! It is the longest day of the year (and the shortest night!)  I hope each of you get to enjoy it in your own, unique way. There are many different things you can do to honor the day. If you do not have alot of time today, your celebration does not have to be elaborate. Or you can work it in to your already busy schedule! You can sit in the grass and meditate for a few minutes, or read a book in the sun, or have a cook out, go for a swim, water your plants, wash your car. You get the idea!  Get outside and feel the warmth of the sun on your face and breathe in the fresh air! Whether it is for a few moments or a few hours, enjoy the warmth and energy of this special day!

I will be posting some pictures of the Spellmaker Solstice fun later on! Stay tuned!

    Love

  • Why do we need spiritual protection?

    Hello everyone!

Very often people will ask me about protection charms, spells, oils, rituals, etc.  We have many things to use for protection at www.spellmaker.com

However, sometimes when I ask them do they mean physical or spiritual protection they ask me, "Do I need spiritual protection?"  YES!  We all do.  Sometimes I think we need it now more than we have ever in the past.  The world is a changing place, and right now, I am not sure that it is changing for the better. (Might have to have a whole post just on that!)

Spiritual protection is something we can all benefit from!  Mean people, negative people, negative energies, evil spirits (though that is the least of it usually, mostly it is humans we need protection from, even ourselves!), self-imposed negativity, lack of confidence, low self worth… all of these types of things harm us.  Spiritual protection can help us battle those things!

One of the items we use is a spiritual protection charm.  It is consecrated on the points of the great power couple lwa, LaSiren and Agwe.

Every so often, we change out the designs of the charms – truthfully, the design of the charm is inconsequential, though we always want them to look nice! The power in the charm is what we do to it here to make it work for you AND what you do to it when you get it to make it powerful.  Our team efforts, yours and ours, is amazing! :)

Anyway, we recently changed out the design of our spiritual protection charm – it is a beautiful stainless steel mermaid! I don't know how long this design will last – we use a small manufacturer who doesn't always have the same designs.  But we enjoy the personal attention from them and love to support small business!

Spiritual protection is important… it can be complicated or it can be simple.  Sometimes that depends on your circumstance and how much negativity you are encountering.

The Spiritual Protection Charm is simple, beautiful, and a great place to start with spiritual protection!

(Please note that the picture on the website might not have been updated yet, but it is the mermaid shown below, while supplies last!)

    Best to all,

  • New Orleans Red Witch Candle

    Hi!

I am taking today to say a few words here about one of my FAVORITE candles – The New Orleans Red Witch!

    A little background first.

The New Orleans Red Witch love candle is something that is used to acquire either new love or help rekindle an old love. It is a milder candle that is based on what was once known as "crimson witch magick." The Crimson Witch was supposedly once a real person (early 1800's) who did witchcraft to save marriages, get those girls or guys
who had no real prospects a relationship, etc. She was purported to be a kind old lady interested in bringing happiness to others. Interestingly enough, the legend goes that she never married having lost her own true love to some kind of accident.

This candle can be used for a variety of things. For a new case, a case in progress, any love situation where you want to lend a slightly softer, loving energy too. Not a power or control candle (along the lines of the Famous Red Mummy) the feelings from this candle are softer and  sweeter. Use the candle with one of your Gris Gris bags from any of the love spells. After beginning your session, chant a bit with your Gris Gris bag, then chat a bit or concentrate on what you are hoping to achieve.

This candle is a lunker! A bit bigger and heavier than the Famous Red Mummy candle. What does that mean? It means you can get MANY MANY sessions from just one candle. The Red Witch candle does come in a three pack for Mind Body Spirit, just like all our other candles. The three pack includes a bigger bottle of oil, bigger bag of herbs, a bag of 30 cones of incense and an incense burner! A three pack of Red Witches can keep you in good stead to do alot of candlework and send alot of sweet energy to your case for a long time πŸ™‚

You can see the Red Witch here at www.spellmaker.com/witch.htm

    Tell her I said HI!

  • Maybe it is You?

Happy Friday, everyone!  Hope your week went well!  Mine seemed to fly by! πŸ™‚  That isn't a bad thing, right?

As one might suspect, I spend a great deal of time asking for and receiving guidance from our great Vodou Spirits (the lwa, les lois).  In the instances where I am asking and receiving, it is very clear cut to me who needs what (since I am the one doing the asking  - LOL).  However, there are instances when I am sent on somewhat of a treasure hunt – someone needs something… what is it?  Where is it? πŸ˜‰

This time the guidance and the search took a rather circuitous route with me looking up different things for Papa Legba. (It is, after his month here at Spellmaker!)  The search for Papa goodies led me to a very powerful post that Khouzhan Menfo' had done some time back regarding a visit he made to a particular monument.

When I ran across that post the guidance that followed was one of those "no guessing" guidances… chills, smiles, tears, butterflies in my stomach.. all that good stuff!  That post was what I was looking for..someone, somewhere needs to see that post!  I don't know who.  I don't know where.  I don't even know if we here at Spellmaker even know the person – all I know is this – Papa says that it will be life-altering for someone.  It will set them on their path.   Maybe it isn't just one person?? That part of the guidance was shielded from me (and that happens, by the way, when the guidance is something that I am just a part of – that I am just a part of of something bigger than just me and what I do).

I am sure that whomever is supposed to see this post will!   I hope that they will join in on one or more of the Papa Legba free rituals this month, too! πŸ™‚

So, anyway, you will see me posting this post just about everywhere that I post things (how many times can I say a version of "post" in a sentence?).

CLICK HERE TO READ THE POST BY KHOUZHAN MENFO'

I feel assured that this will reach the folks that it is supposed to!  Happy to be merely the guide who leads you to it!

I would love it if Khouzhan Menfo's post inspires you in some way and you leave us a comment! It would be great to hear what feelings it brought to you!

    Love, light, and peace,

    Mambo Samantha Corfield, www.spellmaker.com
