  • Autumn Glimmers!

    Fall-foliage

    Autumn Glimmers
    by Khouzhan Morgan

Hello there Spellmaker readers and a welcome to the month of September!

As the days grow cooler and the nights grow longer, our mother earth has begun to shed her gown of luscious green to showcase her cloak of crimson, gold and sienna. Everywhere we are surrounded by the energy of harvest, change and transformation. Fall has always been my favorite time of year, and it simply fills my heart with warmth and my soul with glimmers of joy.

Glimmers are the direct opposite of negative triggers; instead of imparting negative feelings, glimmers gift us with hope, happiness and a feeling that every little thing is gonna be alright. (In the words of the late great Bob Marley).

With this season of change, we can reflect upon those little sparks that make life worth living. What glimmers light up your world, dear reader? What are the things that ensnare your senses just for a moment and give you a perfect sense of awe? In a world where we are bombarded with bad news on television, the internet and social media, it is crucial to take some moments every day just to breathe, find some wonder and just BE.

The arrival of fall is what allows me to embrace those little moments of happiness. The trees are awash with flame hued colors, the spooky glow of candles illuminates ripe picked pumpkins, and the scent and aromatic spices permeates the air. The warm sunshine juxtaposed with the crisp chilly nights leading up to the autumn equinox, shows us that balance is lovely, and yet just a season, in the great circle of life.

Back to school vibes are everywhere, including our Spellmaker home office! Mambo Sam is preparing to teach some very valuable magical lessons once again on Patreon. Get out your wands and parchments, folks, and get ready for โ€œwitch schoolโ€ 2.0!!

I hope you are all as excited as I am to do some learning, find more glimmers in every day life, and enjoy all of the wonders that Autumn has in store for each and every one of us!! Our Spellmaker family sends you jubilation, inspiration and transformation this lovely fall season!!

  • Venus and the Sun

So I wanted to talk a bit about a Venus and Sun conjunction we have recently experienced in the sign of Libra.

First, what does all that astro mumbo jumbo mean? Well…the sun is the sign of the self, your identity. When someone asks you what your "sign" is the answer most people give is the sign that the Sun was astrologically transiting in the heavens on the day they were born. For example, if your birthday is today, October 27, you were born when the sun was in the sign of Scorpio. But the sun, as a rule astrological, translates to the self.

Venus is the planet that rules love and romantic love especially. Also anything that gives us pleasure-lovely art, delicious food, music, beautiful poetry, falls under the gaze of Venus. And Libra, in the 12 houses of the zodiac, rules the 7th house, or the house of partnerships.

So this sun and Venus conjunction in Libra on a very universal level, is giving humankind an opportunity to take stock of our personal relationships. What relationships nourish or deplete you? If you are single, what traits do you want to attract ( or avoid) in a potential partner? How do you approach relationships? Is there room for improvement in your own behavior? Do you and your current partner need to make some changes to improve your relationship?

These are all things that have been coming to and will continue to be, in the forefront as this conjunction finishes out in the heavens. And don't be afraid to put your intentions out there for the things you want in relationships right now!

  • Happy National Black Cat Day!

As a lifelong Halloween lover and cat lover, I am delighted to wish everyone a Happy Black Cat Day ๐Ÿ™‚

I have always, until recently, had a black cat in my brood. Black cats also show up in my life to bring me messages from my ancestors. I don't take this as anything sinister. As a matter if fact, I feel like it is a message for me expressed in a way that I will pay attention, which is pretty darned clever, in my humble opinion!

Of course, all that black cat nonsense about their being signs of bad luck, etc…well that is just a bunch of nonsense! But legitimately, Black cats tend to be euthanized in animal shelters at a higher rate than felines of other colors. This fact has always been so heartbreaking ro me!

I have always found little black cats to be the most magically inclined and loyal! ( Though let's face it…kitties all seem to be rather otherworldly, don't they?)

Many shelters in the U.S. hold adoptions on black cats during the month of October as an effort to keep them from being harmed. I have noticed recently that most of my friends that have gotten cats or kittens in the past few years have adopted a black cat. Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Thackery Binx from Hocus Pocus were, I think, good P.R. for black cats everywhere  ๐Ÿ™‚ And though I have never had one who speaks "human"- I have noticed they tend to be the chatty sort, as far as cats are concerned ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, in honor of this spooky season, I bid you all Happy Haunting, and may you all be lucky enough to be loved by a little black cat…or many!

  • Lammas

Hello there ๐Ÿ™‚ Oh Lammas, the first harvest, how I love this time of year. When humid August clings to the air and clutches the earth in its heady embrace as if to envelop the world before letting go.

Cicadas sing through the heavy stillness that is late summertime and the night sky always takes on a desaturated shade of the darkest blue.

Lammas is on many Pagan calenders for August 1 or 2, but it is really more of a two week process culminating in when the sun actually reaches 15 degrees Leo. (which happens to be today)

This, of course, comes just before our next full moon which will occur on 8/11. That is alot of energy, and astrologically this is the point in the year where we can really boost our manifestation energy!

I wish you all a very happy and health lammas and a wonderful start to the fall season. Ayibobo!

  • Magic

I've just received word that Olivia Newton-John has passed away! For a girl who grew up watching Grease over and over, can sing every song from the movie by heart, and aspired ( like we all did) to be Sandy ( although in truth I'm more like Rizzo) I am just heartbroken! Olivia will always be a part of my childhood, a singer who was sweet enough for little girl to emulate, but still beautiful and talented enough to be a genuine inspiration.

I was feeling so nostalgic, and I dove into some of Newton-John's non Grease songs that I have always loved.

I have been struggling lately with many things. Most of all I feel like I just had another birthday and I have SO many goals I want to reach. But after some serious  relationships stuff and health issues that have prohibited me from working for awhile, I was feeling a little despondent as of late. Like HOW will I ever do the things I want to do in my life. Some days it just seems impossible that I will ever feel productive again.

I have written many times about signs the lwa show us, and of course about what a huge impact they have had on every area of my life. But this was a big one. And I suppose I have Olivia Newton-John (and Erzulie Freda, whom I serve) to thank for this epiphany.

All in PINK were the lyrics to the Olivia Newton-John song "Magic", which I'll be honest, I never knew. Until today. And I knew.

I know I'm not alone in mourning Olivia Newton-John. A generation of girls turned women were so impacted by her iconic role in Grease. My heart goes out to her loved ones, who I hope know that Olivia and her beautiful voice will never be forgotten.

And for any one of you who have some spellwork out there,or any of us who consistently do services and magical work who might be feeling a little bit meh, a little bit confused, aimless-or even like giving up…these lyrics are for you:

    Come take my hand

    You should know me

I've always been in your mind

You know I will be kind

    I'll be guiding you

Building your dream has to start now

There's no other road to take

    You won't make a mistake

    I'll be guiding you

You have to believe we are magic

Nothin' can stand in our way

You have to believe we are magic

Don't let your aim ever stray

And if all your hopes survive

    Destiny will arrive

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

From where I stand, you are home free

    The planets align so rare

    There's promise in the air

    And I'm guiding you

Through every turn I'll be near you

    I'll come anytime you call

I'll catch you when you fall

    I'll be guiding you

You have to believe we are magic

Nothin' can stand in our way

You have to believe we are magic

Don't let your aim ever stray

And if all your hopes survive

    Destiny will arrive

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

You have to believe we are magic

Nothin' can stand in our way

You have to believe we are magic

Don't let your aim ever stray

And if all your hopes survive

    Destiny will arrive

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

I'll bring all your dreams alive

    For you

  • Jupiter retrograde: What does it mean?

    Hello there,

I just want to touch on some astrology for any of you who are interested. In the past few years, I have noticed a huge increase in astrology by the public at large, and especially for anyone interested in magical matters.

One thing that I have really noticed is the discussion of retrograde planets. The problematic thing about planetary retrogrades is that there can be alot of fear mongering involved, which can send people into a panic. So I am here today to tell you: STOP THE INSANITY!!!

Planetary retrogrades have been going on as long as the planets have been in the heavens, and awareness of  retrograde planets has always been there for students of astrology.

Many of us (myself included) have planets retrograde in a natal, or birth chart. Retrogrades are an  inevitable, like the sun setting, the seasons changing, and natural part of the cosmic consciousness.

The KEY to navigating planetary retrogrades is to know what to try to avoid and what to focus more upon during the retrograde period. The same way you know that you need to wear a winter coat in cold months, or know that you need to turn your headlights on to drive your car in the dark, is the way to approach a planetary retrogrades.

So what do we focus on during Jupiter retrograde? Well, Jupiter is the planet of expansion, and in retrograde it can constrict areas concerned with the 9th house, such as travel, moving abroad, higher education, such as enrolling in college or seeking funds for education. And just as the heirophant in tarot can signify a teacher in the literal sense, he can also rule teachings of an esoteric nature. So subjects of religion and spirituality can be affected by a Jupiter retrograde.

Does this mean NOT to follow a spiritual path during the retrograde? Absolutely not. But taking time to really do some soul searching about your beliefs or practices, or actually doing a deep dive into spiritual subjects you want to learn about so you can expand on it eventually, that is right up Jupiter retrograde's cosmic alley!

As with any retrograde, going inward is always a good idea. But does this mean you should just NOT enroll in that college course you have had your eye on? Of course not- it is just that during retrogrades allowing extra time and understanding margins for error or delay is always the wisest course of action.

You can always look into your personal natal chart also to investigate if a planet's retrograde is making aspects to any of your personal planets. (Your sun or moon sign, or your Mercury Mars or Venus placements, respectively.)

So, that is just my 2 cents on the upcoming Jupiter retrograde, which will occur July 28th in โ™ˆ  Aries during the Leo new moon,, and move into Pisces in late October until stationing direct on November 24th.

This retrograde advises us to be wise and listen to our inner teacher as we progress through it.

  • Happy Moon Day 2022

Happy Moon Day to one and all ๐Ÿ™‚

Today is the anniversary of mankind's first moon landing. In 1969, millions watched Neil Armstrong take those first steps and a new era was born.

I love that there is a day to celebrate the moon because honestly, nothing (except maybe HALLOWEEN) makes me feel more magical than that mystical luminary in the night!

I have always been fascinated with the moon's pull over the tides and over the human psyche. I love her in all of her phases, and I love observing what occursas she travels the heavens through the astrological signs.

The moon has been my constant companion in life. There is a comforting familiarity about the moon as she changes every night, and with every season of the year.

No matter where I have been in the world, the moon was always there,  pulling the tides and lighting up the sky.

And I wish all of you a beautiful relationship with the moon, just as I have been lucky enough to have.

"The moon, like a flower in heavenโ€™s high bower, With silent delight sits and smiles on the night." – William Blake

  • Scrappy flags and life lessons

    Hey all

So this summer,my inner crafty person has started to emerge. One of the things I have started creating are scrappy flags. Maybe you have seen them on Etsy or on a neighbor's door. Basically they are scraps if material fastened to a rod or pole in the red white and blue colors of the American flag.

I think one of the reasons I like scrappy flags so much is because I love things that utilize stuff we already have lying around!

These peculiar little craft projects remind me that you can always make something nifty out of what you have-your looks, your dinner, your home decor-even your life. It's the same principle of "bloom where you are planted."

I'm not sure if this makes any sense to anyone out there but I feel like someone needed that message!

  • The fruits of summer

So…I'm not sure if anybody else does this but I am kind of a nerd for seasonal produce.

I think it may be a little bit of a product of all the cooking shows I like to watch but I also feel like it's a product of my observance and practice of voodoo.

It always cracks me up when I'm doing a grocery order online and and I'm subconsciously evaluating which produce can be used to serve which lwa.

I see hot peppers for the Baron and Maman and mangos for Ogoun. I see honeydew melon for La Siren, and strawberries for Erzulie Freda.

Anything super tropical like coconuts and pineapples of course always remind me of our beloved Papa Legba.

But the truth is I really wouldn't change any of this…to me it's just another assurance it's that the wonderful lwa are always with me in my life-I never shop without 'em! ๐Ÿ˜‰
