The Yule Goat: a Hidden Connection to Sobo

Every winter, I see those little straw goats tied with red ribbon popping up in photos, craft shops, and holiday displays. Most people think they’re just a cute Scandinavian tradition — and they are cute — but the Yule Goat is so much more than a decoration. Behind that bundle of straw is an ancient protector whose story carries themes of strength, renewal, and prosperity that echo beautifully across cultures, including our own work with the lwa.

If you’ve never heard of the Yule Goat, you’re not alone. He’s well-known in northern Europe but not often talked about in Voodoo circles. And yet… once you hear his story, you’ll see why this winter guardian fits right into the spiritual language of protection and provision.

Where the Yule Goat Came From

The Yule Goat’s story stretches deep into pre-Christian Scandinavia. Long before reindeer and sleigh bells, midwinter celebrations centered on survival — keeping the home safe, protecting the harvest, and calling back the returning light.

One of the oldest winter customs involved saving the last sheaf of grain from the harvest and crafting it into a goat. This goat became the household guardian for the dark half of the year, carrying blessings of protection, good fortune, and strength.

As centuries passed, the Yule Goat absorbed more layers of meaning. People dressed up as goats during Yule, knocking on doors to test hospitality, offer blessings, or chase away lingering negativity from the old year. And woven into all of this was the thunder god Thor — whose chariot raced across the winter sky, pulled by two mighty goats.

So yes… a straw goat is doing a lot more than sitting on a shelf.

Thor’s Goats and the Promise of Endless Provision

Thor’s goats — Tanngrisnir (“Teeth-Barer”) and Tanngnjóstr (“Teeth-Grinder”) — weren’t ordinary animals. They were symbols of power, sustenance, and miraculous renewal.

Each night, Thor could slaughter and cook the goats to feed himself and anyone traveling with him. And each morning, as long as their bones were laid together unbroken, the goats regenerated — whole, strong, alive, and ready to pull his chariot again.

It’s a breathtaking symbol when you sit with it:

You will always be provided for.
    What nourishes you will return.
    Blessings renew themselves.
Prosperity is a cycle, not a one-time gift.

It’s winter survival woven into mythic form — a miracle of provision at the darkest time of year.

Where Sobo Steps Into the Story

Here’s where this gets especially meaningful for those of us who work within the Voodoo tradition.

Sobo, the lwa of thunder, strength, clarity, and rightful power, is frequently depicted in imagery reminiscent of Thor — riding in a chariot with goats or rams leading the way, lightning illuminating the sky around him. This is not syncretism; it’s a recognition of universal symbolism. Thunder spirits across cultures share the same roles: protectors, road-openers, bringers of nourishment and stability.

Just like Thor, Sobo clears obstacles, fortifies your path, strengthens your will, and brings material support when it’s needed most. His presence is grounding, bright, and deeply stabilizing.

When you look at the Yule Goat through this lens — a guardian woven from the harvest, tied to thunder, and rooted in renewal — it harmonizes beautifully with Sobo’s energy.

Both traditions carry teachings of protection through the long nights, strength in the face of darkness, cycles of nourishment and return, and prosperity that regenerates itself. The symbols are different, the cultures are different, but the spiritual heartbeat is the same.

Why the Yule Goat Belongs in a Voodoo Home

Setting out a Yule Goat this winter isn’t just adopting a Scandinavian custom — it’s inviting in a symbol that speaks to Sobo’s own sacred qualities.

He becomes a cross-cultural winter guardian:
standing at your hearth, carrying the memory of ancient thunder, promising renewed strength, and reminding you that provision is ongoing.

The Yule Goat says: “You are protected. You have enough. More is coming. Blessings return.”
    That is Sobo’s voice too.

A Simple Yule Blessing to Honor Both Traditions

If you’d like to weave these energies together, try this small act:

Place a Yule Goat near your altar or front doorway.
Light a white or golden candle beside it.
    Say:

“Strength before me, strength behind me.
Provision above me, provision beneath me.
Let what I need return renewed.”

Then give thanks to Sobo for his clarity, protection, and thunder-bright power.

    Yule Blessings!

  • Free Classes Going Great!

    Hello everyone!

It probably comes as no surprise to many of you that I love to teach!  At one point in time, I actually thought that my career would be that of a professor.  Life took me in a different direction, but I have had my chance at teaching many times in my life:  I have taught drama, karate, English, writing, acting, and, of course, Vodou/voodoo and other magickal subjects.

We have recently started up our public classes again here at www.spellmaker.com!  I am happy to be back in the teaching saddle again.  :-)  We have started out with a series of classes on getting to know and live with the Vodou spirits, the lwa, les lois, or the loa!  Class has been fun and rewarding.  It's always great to get to meet and teach both new and old friends!

As we move along, we will be teaching many different metaphysical and occult subjects.  While Vodou/voodoo is our main focus most of the time, we will also teach witchcraft, hoodoo, root work, and other things as we continue on.

These particular classes are completely free – all are welcome!  As we move along, many subjects will be covered.  We would love for you to join us.   Our format is different than it used to be. We used to be in a typing-only chat room.  We did have fun!  Now we have a fancy Adobe-based classroom where you can actually see me, but you remain anonymous (unless you choose otherwise).  Also, the classes are recorded in case you miss a class and don't want to be behind on the next class.  I am including a link here to the very first recorded class of this series so that you can get an idea of the class structure.

If you desire to see the class, just click here to go to the recording.

We do ask that you register for class if you desire to attend.  Registration is simple, free, and no one is going to use your information to try to sell you anything!

If you desire to register for class, just click here to register.

I do hope that you will join us!  We have fun and you are welcome to participate as little or as much as you desire.

    Love to all,

  • Valentine’s Ritual Countdown! 🙂

Hello everyone! Well, it seems like Christmas just passed and we are talking about our annual Valentine's Day Ritual to Erzulie Freda!   As the years have passed in doing this ritual, I find that I look forward to it more and more.

First off, there is the shopping for it!  As many of you know, we are pretty firm believers in Dollar Store Voodoo, with all the shiny trinkets and doo-dads that can be used to make a great altar.  Of course, we have many luxurious and special items for Erzulie Freda that we have collected over the years, but it is really a lot of fun to put together the Valentine's altar with, well, Valentine's goodies!

Second, I have noticed over the years how the petitions that people send in have evolved.  In the beginning, the petitions seemed very cut-and-dried: " I love Fred (or Frederica), please let him/her love me."  Those petitions have evolved into asking for love for everyone and all kinds of love – the love that peace would bring, love for children, charitable love, brotherly love, etc.  Many have sent in petitions for those they knew were in different kinds of need.  So petitions for healing love, financial love, and job love have abounded, too!

I certainly do not see anything wrong with that at all!  Just the very word "love" encompasses such a rich variety of meanings from loving ice cream to loving our husbands, wives, children, parents, and everything beyond and in between!  Looking at Valentine's Day as an opportunity to experience and share love of all kinds paints a beautiful broad spectrum of love that goes beyond paper hearts and yummy chocolates!

As we prepare for this coming Valentine's Ritual, I propose that we all see how creative we can get in our petitioning this year!  What forms of love can you radiate, choose to spread, and make a wish about?  Don't worry about sending in petitions that don't seem like the "norm!" There is NO norm when it comes to love – it is supposed to be open, crazy, fabulous, and it is supposed to mean whatever you personally want it to mean!  So don't be stopped by what you think someone else thinks you should be petitioning!  Send all your open-armed, open-minded, open-spirited petitions right on in!  (See the link above!).

    Love, light, and peace,
    Mambo Samantha Corfield

  • What does the New Year hold for you?

Happy day after Christmas everyone!  I hope you all had a peaceful and safe day.  So another Christmas – good, bad, or indifferent  – is behind us!  Now it is time to look forward to brand new year.  2008 is upon us!  Now is the time to decide what you want in 2008 and what steps you will take to insure that you get it.

Obviously this is the time of year that we all make those "New Year’s Resolutions."  But I would urge you to take that a step further and make a list of what you want to happen in this New Year.  This is not so much a matter of "I am going to go on a diet and stick to it" or "I will stop smoking."  Those are "resolutions" that put a burden on you and then if you fail at them, you end up feeling guilty, depressed, and about two or three months into the year you can start to feel like this is another year that is a bust for you.

What I am talking about is making yourself a mini Life Plan for the year.  Let’s say you want to purchase a new car in 2008, lose weight, and move into a better apartment.   Don’t just make yourself meaningless resolutions!   Instead, start to make an actual plan.  Do it on your computer or in a notebook; use something in which you can keep a record of your progress.   Start with your first goal.  Let’s say "Get a New Car in 2008."  Then list underneath that goal the things surrounding that goal:  The price range, the type of vehicle you need, makes and models you are interested in.   Can you afford it?  Will you do extra work or get a part time job to pay for it if necessary?  Cover all the details of this goal and HOW you can manifest it for yourself.  You can even decide if you will use magick to help you!!  Will you use some green candle magick kits or other money/luck magick products to help yourself out with the money needed to make this happen?   Set a schedule of what you will do when!  When you are satisfied with the plan for that goal – go on to the next one.

Once you are finished, the true resolution you need to make to yourself is to refer to your plan often.  See where you are with each goal.  If you feel you are not attaining those goals, see what you need to do to perhaps rework your plan or even change your goal slightly.  When you have a true plan for getting a goal, you really don’t need to constrain yourself completely in a timeline.  Using the getting a new car example, let’s say that you chose June 2008 as the time you wanted to have the new car by.  June rolls around and you are looking through your goal planning book, and you find that new car isn’t manifesting itself yet.  However, you see that you have saved $1,000.00 towards the goal and you are still working towards it.  That’s fine!!  Don’t give up just because you didn’t get the car by June!  Keep at it, keep working your plan.  Maybe you need to change the plan a little bit:  Maybe you need a different make or model or price range.   Give yourself a break by being a little bit flexible on that goal.

Hey, no one’s plan is perfect!  You may or may not reach all the goals by the end of 2008.  But even if you don’t, you can easily carry your plan over until you do reach those goals!!

So get out those pens and papers or word processing programs and start to plan a great 2008 for yourself!

    Love, Mambo Sam

  • Getting Ready for Fet Ghede

Hello everyone!  It is getting to be Fet Ghede time!  Fet Ghede is the time of year when Vodouisants celebrate their "new year" festitivities.   It is considered a time of paying off old debts, starting fresh, and planning for the upcoming year.

Visiting cemeteries to clean the grave of ancestors and doing ancestral feasts is also a part of this tradition.  It is a time for partying, though, not mourning and grieving.  It is a time of celebrating not only our past but, more importantly, our future.

If you are attending my online chat classes then you know we are planning a ritual together on November 2, Fet Ghede!  I hope to see you all there!  (Thank you, Bridget, for the cool graphic!)
