    The story of how St. Roch became the patron saint of dogs is a tale rooted in compassion, selflessness, and a deep connection with both humans and animals. St. Roch, also known as San Rocco or Saint Roche, lived during the 14th century in Montpellier, France.

    Roch was born into a noble family and was orphaned at a young age. He inherited a considerable fortune and chose to dedicate his life to serving those in need. When a plague swept through his town, Roch's heart went out to the suffering and he selflessly tended to the sick and dying, providing comfort and care to those who were abandoned by others.

    During his travels, Roch contracted the plague himself. He retreated to a nearby forest to isolate himself, so as not to spread the disease further. It's during this period of isolation that a miraculous event occurred, solidifying his connection to dogs and earning him the title of the patron saint of dogs.

    Legend has it that while Roch was in the forest, a dog belonging to a local lord discovered him and began bringing him food, licking his wounds, and providing companionship. This loyal dog, acting as a sort of guardian angel, sustained Roch throughout his illness and aided in his recovery. The dog's devotion and care were instrumental in saving Roch's life.

    When Roch finally recovered, he returned to his town to find it ravaged by the plague. He resumed his work of caring for the sick and healing the afflicted. His identity, however, remained concealed, as he did not want recognition for his noble actions.

    One day, as he was caring for ailing patients, Roch was arrested under suspicion of being a spy due to his concealed identity. He was imprisoned and eventually died in captivity. It was only after his death that his true identity was revealed, and the people of the town recognized him as a selfless servant of humanity.

    Roch's connection with dogs during his time of illness, along with his unwavering compassion for both humans and animals, led to his association with dogs as their patron saint. His story spread across different cultures, and over time, he became known as the protector and guardian of dogs, as well as someone to turn to for healing and protection against diseases.

    The veneration of St. Roch as the patron saint of dogs became especially prominent during times of disease outbreaks when people sought intercession for the health and well-being of their beloved pets. His feast day, August 16th, is celebrated by many communities around the world with blessings for dogs and other animals, as well as prayers for protection against illnesses.

    The story of St. Roch's journey from a compassionate caretaker of the sick to the patron saint of dogs exemplifies the profound impact that empathy and kindness can have on both humans and the animals we share our lives with.

    Hi readers!
    In honor of Friday October the 13th I thought I’d talk a little bit about-what else-superstitions! (and if you’re not familiar with this awesome song, take a listen. Great for your Halloween playlist!)

    As many of you know, Friday the 13th has a ton of superstitions attached to it for a myriad of reasons. The arrest of the Knights Templar in 1307 on Friday the 13th or the 13 participants in the biblical Last Supper are often cited as reasons to associate the number with misfortune.

    Going back even further to Norse lore, Loki, God of mischief, was the party crashing 13th guest at a gathering of the Gods. There Loki provoked the assassination of the handsome Baldur, God of all beauty. Baldur’s death resulted in darkness falling unto Midgard, the world of mortal men.

    As a result of this “13 is bad luck” belief, lots of fear naturally surrounds the day.  Paraskevidekatriaphobia is a real thing! (yes that is the actual word for fear of Friday the 13th!) But is it really bad luck? Or do we just believe that because it has a bad reputation?

    As we are in the month of October, I feel it would be remiss not to mention black cats in the superstitious mix! The belief that black cats bring bad luck or evil is so persistent that rescues and shelters halt adoptions of these beautiful felines until after Halloween. This rule is, of course, to keep those precious teacup panthers safe from harm!

    As a lover of all cats, I have to say that I vehemently disagree with this nonsense about black cats being anything but magical and wonderful!  They have always been faithful familiars and brought messages from spirit for me. Black cats are gorgeous, loyal, and really do leave a little bit of enchantment in their path.  

    Still…I can’t deny a belief in some superstitions! I toss spilled salt over my shoulder, pick up pennies for luck (and for Papa Legba of course) and smudge my home with sage or incense on the regular! Life can get overwhelming, and I try to keep my space serene. Cleansing the energy around me is a simple thing but makes a huge difference. Chango’s Mystic Chrysalis incense is sometimes just what the doctor ordered when my house feels energetically heavy.      Also-I never blow out a spell candle, lest I blow the magic away! Sometimes life throws a lot at us, and the struggle is real. Magic can help!

    Happy Mabon!  Homemade potpourri is a fun Mabon project.  It’s easy to do with kids or perhaps your elderly relatives.  And even though “potpourri” means “rotten pot” – it sure smells better than it translates.  

    I asked Gran Bwa to give me some ideas of what should go in a potpourri dedicated to him and this is what he offered!  But you could just use this for ideas and add your own wonderful flowers, fruits, seeds, etc.  
     
    Ingredients

    1. 2.5 cups of dried apple slices
    2. 1 cup of dried orange peels or really almost any citrus peels – try grapefruit, lemon, etc.  Even better if you save them and dry them yourself.  You can easily dry fruit peels in your oven at a low temperature, about 200º F for a couple of hours, checking and turning frequently
    3. 1 cup cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces
    4. ½ cup cardamom pods
    5. ¼  cup whole cloves
    6. Add in rosemary, nutmeg, ginger, star anise, black peppercorns, any combination.
    7. 3-4 bay leaves
    8. Small pine cones (even better if you can go pick them up in nature)
    9. Pick some fall wildflowers and let them dry out or just add them as is and allow them to dry in the potpourri (if you do this, plan on stirring your potpourri around to let them get air
    10. A little bit of vanilla or other oil that you like
    Directions
    Break down the larger pieces.  If you have a mortar and pestle, use it to grind down some of the bay leaves or other items to help release the oils.  Otherwise, just break some of the items down to smaller pieces.  You want a mixture of your smaller and larger pieces.  Mix them all up in a big bowl and add your oil.  Cover it for a couple of days to let it all blend.  You can burn some green candles that you dedicate to Gran Bwa near the bowl and ask him to bless the potpourri for a bountiful year for you and yours.
    ***PLEASE NOTE ; This potpourri is NOT TO BE TAKEN INTERNALLY – DO NOT EAT IT!  It looks pretty and smells amazing, but do not eat 🙂 ****

    To begin our journey, let's delve into the first harvest, Lughnasadh. Celebrated in early August, this Celtic festival marks the beginning of the harvest season. Witches, often seen as guardians of nature's cycles, harness the energy of Lughnasadh to honor the Earth's generosity and to manifest their intentions. It's a period when spells for abundance and prosperity are cast, and the echoes of the harvest's first fruits resonate with the rituals of the natural world.

    Moving forward to Mabon, the second harvest celebrated during the autumn equinox, we find another layer of connection between the Three Harvests and witchcraft. As day and night achieve perfect balance, witches recognize this equilibrium as an opportunity for reflection and gratitude. Mabon serves as a time to honor the autumnal harvest, with crafting elaborate altars adorned with symbols of abundance, like apples and gourds. We use this period to give thanks for the bounty of nature and to attune themselves to the changing energies of the season.

    The final harvest, Samhain, is perhaps the most famous, as it coincides with modern Halloween celebrations. For Vodouisants, it is a time for Ancestor service and more!  This sacred time, observed at the end of October, marks the end of the agricultural year and the beginning of winter's slumber. Witches and practitioners of all kinds view Samhain as a liminal space when the veil between the physical world and the spirit realm is thin. It's a time for divination, honoring ancestors, and seeking wisdom from the other side. Many may perform rituals to communicate with departed loved ones or to harness the potent energies of this time for their magical endeavors.

    As we contemplate the harmonious dance between the Three Harvests and witchcraft, we find a delightful interplay of nature, spirituality, and tradition. These celebrations, rooted in the agricultural cycles of our ancestors, have evolved into a modern enchantment that weaves its way through the tapestry of life. Whether you are a practitioner or simply a lover of folklore, the Three Harvests offer a bewitching connection to the rhythms of the natural world and the mystical realms beyond.
